Ametrine does not hide its contrasts. Yet despite those differences, the stone still feels cohesive and whole.
That is what I love most about Ametrine. It is not simply Amethyst placed beside Citrine as though two unrelated stones have been joined together. They share the same structure, the same formation and the same physical body while expressing themselves differently.
There is elegance in that kind of coexistence. Nothing needs to be diluted, hidden or made identical for the whole to feel harmonious.

What Is Ametrine?
Ametrine is a naturally bicoloured variety of Quartz containing both Amethyst and Citrine colour within the same crystal.
Its name is formed by combining ame from Amethyst with trine from Citrine. The material is also correctly described as Amethyst-Citrine or Amethyst-Citrine Quartz.
The purple and yellow zones are not two stones glued together, nor is one mineral growing as an inclusion inside another. Both areas are Quartz. They share the same basic chemical formula and crystal structure.
What changes is the state of the iron-related colour centres within different growth sectors of the crystal.
In the purple areas, iron and natural irradiation produce the colour centres associated with Amethyst. In the yellow areas, the iron exists in a different structural or oxidation environment, creating natural Citrine colour. The result is one Quartz crystal carrying two recognised colour expressions.
Is Ametrine Really Two Minerals?
In everyday conversation, people often describe Ametrine as “two crystals in one,” and visually that makes perfect sense.
Mineralogically, however, Amethyst and Citrine are not separate mineral species. They are colour varieties of the same mineral: Quartz.
Ametrine therefore contains two Quartz varieties rather than two different mineral species.

These changes did not necessarily occur as one colour forming first and the other simply coating it later. In many crystals, the colours occupy distinct growth sectors within the same generation of Quartz.
That sector zoning may form straight boundaries, triangular areas or a six-part pattern radiating from the centre when the crystal is viewed in the correct orientation. Researchers studying the Anahí material confirmed that its Amethyst-Citrine zoning is natural rather than the result of laboratory treatment.

Bolivianite
Bolivianite is a commercial and locality-inspired name for Ametrine from Bolivia.

The Anahí Mine and Bolivia
The Principal Source of Natural Ametrine
The Anahí Mine in southeastern Bolivia is the world’s only significant commercial source of natural Ametrine.
It lies in the Santa Cruz region, close to the border with Brazil. The deposit occurs in fractured carbonate rocks, including dolomitic limestone, where hydrothermal Quartz developed in veins and brecciated zones.

Some Ametrine has historically been cut, traded or exported through Brazil because the mine lies comparatively close to the border and Brazil has a major gemstone-cutting industry.
A stone being processed or sold through Brazil does not necessarily mean it formed there.

What I love most about Ametrine is the way two different crystal expressions can coexist so cohesively and elegantly within one stone.
The purple does not need to become less purple to accommodate the gold, and the gold does not need to dim itself so the purple can remain visible. They each retain their own character, yet neither feels misplaced. The stone does not look divided to me. It looks complete.
There is something quietly beautiful about that, especially in a world that so often assumes harmony requires sameness. Ametrine shows us contrast without conflict. Its colours can meet along a sharp line, move through soft transitions or occupy entirely different sectors, but they still belong to the same crystal and share the same foundation.
I also love that this visual balance has a genuine geological explanation. It is not symbolism imposed on an unrelated object after the fact. The crystal really did grow under conditions that allowed two distinct colour centres to develop together.
