Crystal Care Guide
Caring for Nature's Treasures
Crystals, minerals, gemstones and fossils are among nature's most remarkable creations.
Formed over thousands, millions and sometimes billions of years, each specimen carries its own story, shaped by extraordinary geological processes and the artistry of the natural world.
Whether you are a seasoned collector, a curious beginner or someone who simply appreciates their natural beauty, caring for your treasures thoughtfully helps preserve their character and allows them to be enjoyed for years to come.
At Enchantress Collective, we believe these gifts of nature deserve to be appreciated, respected and cared for with intention.
Understanding Natural Variation
No two crystals are exactly alike.
Natural inclusions.
Growth patterns.
Colour variations.
Matrix.
Fractures.
Druzy formations.
Texture differences.
These characteristics are not imperfections.
They are part of the individuality and story of each specimen.
Many of the features that make a crystal unique are the result of the extraordinary conditions under which it formed.
Rather than seeking perfection, we encourage appreciation of the natural character that makes every piece one of a kind.
Handle With Care
Many crystals and minerals are surprisingly durable.
Others are remarkably delicate.
Some may chip, scratch, cleave or fracture if dropped or handled roughly.
To help protect your collection:
• Handle specimens carefully.
• Avoid dropping crystals onto hard surfaces.
• Lift larger specimens from underneath rather than by delicate points or formations.
• Avoid stacking fragile specimens together.
• Keep delicate pieces away from areas where they may be knocked over.
Remember that even hard minerals can be damaged by impact.
Handling Specimens & Natural Oils
Many collectors enjoy handling their crystals, minerals and fossils, and for most specimens occasional handling is perfectly fine.
However, it is worth remembering that the natural oils, moisture and residues present on our skin can affect certain minerals over time.
Some specimens are particularly sensitive and may gradually lose their natural lustre, develop surface changes or become more susceptible to deterioration when frequently handled.
Pyrite is a well-known example. Excessive handling can dull its naturally bright metallic surface over time as oils from the skin accumulate on the specimen.
To help preserve delicate, rare or highly polished specimens:
• Handle them with clean, dry hands.
• Minimise unnecessary handling where possible.
• Consider wearing clean cotton gloves when handling valuable, delicate or highly sensitive specimens.
• Avoid touching display specimens repeatedly if preserving their original surface condition is important.
While many minerals are quite resilient, thoughtful handling helps ensure their beauty and character can be appreciated for years to come.
Water and Moisture
One of the most common misconceptions is that all crystals can safely be washed in water.
This is not the case.
Some minerals are water-sensitive, porous, soluble or prone to deterioration when exposed to moisture.
Examples include:
• Selenite
• Satin Spar
• Halite
• Angelite
• Celestite
• Malachite
• Azurite
• Chrysocolla
• Pyrite
• Desert Rose formations
Because every mineral is different, we recommend researching the specific care requirements of a specimen before exposing it to water.
When in doubt, avoid water entirely.
A dry microfibre cloth, soft brush or gentle dusting is often the safest option.
Sunlight and UV Exposure
While natural sunlight can beautifully illuminate crystals, prolonged exposure may cause some minerals to fade or become damaged over time.
Particularly light-sensitive specimens include:
• Amethyst
• Rose Quartz
• Fluorite
• Celestite
• Kunzite
• Smoky Quartz
• Citrine (especially heat-treated material)
To help preserve colour and vibrancy:
• Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
• Display light-sensitive pieces in shaded areas.
• Rotate display specimens occasionally.
• Consider UV exposure when choosing display locations.
Cleaning Your Crystals
Different crystals require different care.
For routine maintenance, we recommend:
• Dusting with a soft microfibre cloth.
• Using a soft cosmetic brush or artist's brush for detailed formations.
• Gently blowing dust from delicate areas.
• Handling specimens with clean, dry hands or cotton gloves where appropriate.
Avoid:
• Harsh chemicals.
• Household cleaners.
• Abrasive brushes.
• Ultrasonic cleaners.
• Steam cleaners.
• Soaking specimens unless their suitability is known.
If you are uncertain about cleaning a particular mineral, seek advice before proceeding.
Displaying Your Collection
Displaying crystals allows their beauty to be appreciated while helping create meaningful and inspiring spaces.
When displaying crystals:
• Choose stable surfaces.
• Keep fragile specimens away from edges.
• Protect delicate formations from accidental knocks.
• Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
• Keep specimens away from excessive humidity where possible.
• Consider the weight of larger specimens when selecting shelving.
For households with children or pets, additional care should be taken with fragile, heavy or sharp specimens.
Storing Crystals and Minerals
When not on display, proper storage can help preserve your collection.
We recommend:
• Wrapping delicate specimens individually.
• Using padded storage boxes or compartments.
• Separating harder minerals from softer minerals.
• Storing in a dry environment.
• Labelling specimens where appropriate.
Collectors often discover that thoughtful storage helps prevent accidental damage over time.
Fossils and Ancient Treasures
Fossils deserve the same care and respect as crystals and minerals.
Many fossils are surprisingly durable, while others may be fragile due to age, mineral composition or preservation conditions.
Avoid:
• Excessive moisture.
• Harsh cleaning methods.
• Abrasive scrubbing.
• Prolonged direct sunlight.
Treat fossils gently and preserve them as the natural historical treasures they are.
Appreciating Nature's Artistry
One of the things we love most about crystals, minerals and fossils is that they remind us that perfection is not always found in uniformity.
Nature creates individuality.
Unexpected colours.
Unique inclusions.
Extraordinary formations.
Beautiful imperfections.
These characteristics tell the story of a specimen's journey and often become the very features that make it most captivating.
At Enchantress Collective, we believe that understanding and appreciating these natural variations deepens our connection to the treasures we choose to bring into our homes and lives.
Crystals, Meaning & Personal Connection
People are drawn to crystals for many different reasons.
Some are fascinated by their geology and formation.
Some appreciate their colours, patterns and natural beauty.
Others enjoy the symbolism, traditions and personal meaning they may represent.
At Enchantress Collective, we believe there is no single "right" way to connect with a crystal.
Whether a specimen inspires curiosity, learning, reflection or simply admiration, the most meaningful connection is the one that resonates with you personally.
A Final Thought
Whether you collect for their beauty, their geological significance, their symbolism or simply because they bring you joy, every crystal has its own story.
By caring for these natural treasures thoughtfully, we help preserve that story for years to come.
We hope your collection continues to inspire curiosity, wonder, learning and appreciation for the extraordinary artistry found within the natural world.
