Why Are No Two Crystals the Same?

Pick up two pieces of Rose Quartz.

Or two Amethysts.

Or even two seemingly ordinary pebbles from the beach.

At first glance they may appear almost identical.

Look a little closer.

You'll begin to notice the differences.

One may be slightly darker.

Another may contain tiny inclusions that look like wisps of cloud suspended inside the stone.

One may sparkle with countless tiny crystal faces.

Another may have formed in smooth, flowing bands.

One may fit perfectly into the palm of your hand.

Another may have grown into an entirely different shape.

Even crystals that formed in the same region, from the same mineral and over the same period of geological time are never truly identical.

I think that's rather wonderful.

Because it reminds us that nature has never been interested in perfection.

Nature is interested in possibility.


Nature Doesn't Make Copies

We often think of crystals as though they were manufactured objects.
