A Hyacinth For your Soul

Every family has its own little sayings. Some are passed down through treasured recipes or old photographs, while others quietly become part of the way we see the world. They become so familiar that we stop thinking about where they came from because they simply become part of who we are.

In our family, one of those sayings was "a Hyacinth for the Soul."

It came from my great-grandmother, whose favourite flower was the humble hyacinth. She loved everything about them. Their beautiful fragrance would fill a room long before you noticed the flowers themselves, and somehow they always seemed to brighten her day. Whenever life felt particularly busy, difficult or simply a little ordinary, she would buy herself a pot of hyacinths.

Over time, though, the flowers became something much bigger than the flowers themselves.

"A Hyacinth for the Soul" became our family's way of describing anything that nourished the heart, fed the body, inspired the mind or lifted the spirit. It might be something beautiful, something thoughtful or simply something that reminded us to slow down and notice the goodness that still exists in the world.

Sometimes it was a meaningful gift. Sometimes it was a beautiful object that brought joy every time you walked past it. Sometimes it was a new book that opened your mind to an idea you had never considered before, a quiet walk beneath old trees, an afternoon spent creating, A sweet treat to eat, a conversation that stayed with you long after it had ended or a favourite meal shared with people you love.

Sometimes it was as simple as a bunch of fresh flowers sitting on the kitchen table.

The object itself was never really the point.

The point was recognising that our souls need tending just as much as the rest of us.

Life asks a great deal of us. There are responsibilities to meet, people to care for, disappointments to navigate, endless washing baskets, never-ending lists and seasons that can leave us feeling tired without quite knowing why. It can be very easy to believe that caring for ourselves is something we'll do later, once everything else has been taken care of.

My great-grandmother believed otherwise.

She believed that we should collect little moments of joy along the way. That beauty mattered. That learning mattered. That kindness mattered. That making time for the things that nourish our hearts wasn't selfish or indulgent. It was simply part of living a rich and meaningful life.

The women in my family have quietly carried that philosophy through the generations, and somewhere along the way it became part of who I am too.

When I look around the Enchantress Collective, I realise that many of the things you'll discover here began as one of my own Hyacinths for the Soul.

A crystal that sparked my curiosity about the natural world.

A piece of jewellery that marked an important chapter of my life.

A journal that held my thoughts when I needed somewhere to begin.

A beautiful object that simply made me smile every time I saw it.

A story that changed the way I looked at the world.

But the most precious Hyacinths for the Soul have never been things at all.

They have been conversations that stayed with me long after they ended. A sunrise that made me stop in my tracks. Laughter around a family table. The smell of rain after a long dry spell. A lesson learnt the hard way. The kindness of a stranger. Time spent with people I love. A place that felt like home. A memory that still makes me smile years later.

Some of life's greatest treasures can never be held in our hands. They become part of us instead. They shape the way we think, the way we love, the way we see the world and the people around us.

Perhaps that's why this philosophy has stayed with me for so many years.

It reminds me that a life well lived isn't measured by how much we own, but by how deeply we experience it. By the moments that make us pause. By the people we meet. By the things we learn. By the beauty we choose to notice, even on ordinary days.

A Hyacinth for the Soul isn't measured by its price or its size. It's measured by the way it makes you feel long after the moment has passed.

That philosophy sits quietly at the heart of the Enchantress Collective.

Not because I believe beautiful things have the power to change our lives on their own, but because they can become part of a much bigger story. They can remind us of a person we love, a place we've been, a lesson we've learnt or the kind of person we hope to become.

Perhaps your own Hyacinths for the Soul will look completely different to mine, and I think that's exactly as it should be.

For you, they might be found in your garden, on a favourite walking track, in the pages of a well-loved book, around a family dinner table or in the quiet moments before the rest of the world wakes. They might be found in music, in creativity, in learning something new or in simply sitting with a good cup of coffee and watching the rain.

Whatever they are, I hope you never stop collecting them.

Because sometimes the smallest things become the ones that nourish us the most.
