Anhydrite forms primarily through the evaporation of ancient bodies of sea water. Curious Minds Want to Know
Angelite’s geological relationship with Gypsum is one of the most elegant examples of a reversible mineral transformation in nature. Gypsum and Anhydrite share the same chemical base — calcium sulphate — but Gypsum contains water molecules within its crystal structure. When buried under sufficient pressure and exposed to higher temperatures, Gypsum releases those water molecules and converts to Anhydrite. When Anhydrite is later exposed to groundwater near the Earth’s surface, it can reabsorb water and convert back to Gypsum.
