About Apatite

Apatite is a group of phosphate minerals found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks throughout the world. Although it is relatively well known amongst mineral collectors, gem-quality Apatite is considerably rarer than many of the more familiar gemstones found in jewellery.

Its name comes from the Greek word apate, meaning "to deceive," because Apatite can resemble many other gemstones, including Aquamarine, Paraíba Tourmaline and Topaz. This similarity has fascinated mineralogists for centuries and inspired its distinctive name.

The vivid blue and green colours are primarily caused by trace elements within the crystal structure, creating some of the most striking natural colours found in the gemstone world.

Major sources of gem-quality Apatite include Madagascar, Brazil, Mexico, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and parts of Africa.

To clean, use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free soap made with naturally occurring surfactants, then dry gently with a soft microfibre cloth.

Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners, as these may damage the stone or any natural internal features.
