The Story Written by the Earth
Cinnabar is a mercury sulfide mineral, composed of one mercury atom bonded to one sulfur atom, giving it the chemical formula HgS.
It is the Earth's primary natural source of mercury and has been mined for thousands of years.
Most Cinnabar forms in low-temperature hydrothermal environments, where hot, mineral-rich fluids move through fractures in the Earth's crust.
As these fluids cool, mercury and sulfur combine to crystallise within veins and cavities, often alongside minerals such as Quartz, Calcite, Dolomite, Barite and Pyrite.
Although Cinnabar sometimes occurs as massive red deposits, the finest collector specimens display spectacular translucent to opaque crystals with brilliant adamantine lustre.
These crystals belong to the trigonal crystal system and often form short prismatic or rhombohedral shapes.
One of the most famous localities is Almadén in Spain, one of the world's oldest and most historically significant mercury mines. Mining there began over 2,000 years ago and supplied much of the mercury used throughout Europe and beyond.
Exceptional specimens have also been recovered from China, where vivid red Cinnabar crystals on white Dolomite have become some of the most sought-after mineral specimens in the world.
Important deposits are also found in Peru, Mexico, Slovenia, Italy, Kyrgyzstan and parts of the United States.
Cinnabar's remarkable scarlet colour comes directly from the way its crystal structure absorbs and reflects light.
It is so intensely coloured that, when finely ground, it became the source of the famous pigment known as Vermilion.

Cinnabar is one of those minerals that fascinates me because it reminds me that nature isn't always simple.
So often we think of crystals as beautiful, peaceful things that simply sit on a shelf and sparkle.
Cinnabar asks us to think a little deeper.
It is breathtakingly beautiful.
That vivid scarlet red is unlike almost anything else in the mineral world. Every time I see a really good specimen against white Dolomite, I can't help but stop and admire it. It's one of those colour combinations that almost doesn't look real.
And then you learn what it is.
Mercury.
Suddenly, your relationship with the mineral changes.
Not because it becomes less beautiful.
Because you understand it better.
I actually like that.
I think collecting minerals comes with a responsibility to learn about them, not just admire them. Every specimen has its own story, its own chemistry and its own place in the natural world.
