It is one of the few minerals capable of producing almost every colour imaginable.

Walk through a mineral show and you'll quickly understand why collectors find it so difficult to walk past a beautiful Fluorite specimen.

The Story Written by the Earth

Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral, with the chemical formula CaF₂.

It belongs to the halide mineral group and is one of the world's most important industrial minerals, while also being one of its most admired collector specimens.

It forms most commonly from hydrothermal fluids.

These hot, mineral-rich waters move through fractures and cavities within the Earth's crust, slowly cooling as they travel.

As temperatures decrease, calcium and fluorine combine to crystallise into Fluorite.

Given enough space and stable conditions, these crystals develop into the beautiful cubes for which the mineral is famous.

Fluorite belongs to the isometric (cubic) crystal system, one of the highest symmetry crystal systems found in nature.

I'll tell myself,

Then I'll open a box from a supplier...

And there it is.

Another one I absolutely have to have.

What I love most about Fluorite is its geometry.

Those perfectly formed cubes fascinate me.

Nature doesn't often produce something that looks so wonderfully precise. Every edge is crisp. Every face meets at exactly the right angle. Sometimes it looks less like a crystal and more like a tiny piece of architecture.

Then you add the colour.

Oh my goodness...

The colour.

Rainbow Fluorite has to be one of nature's greatest achievements.

Greens.

Purples.

Blues.

Sometimes all three flowing through the same crystal as though they've been poured together.

Other times they're separated into perfectly defined bands, each one recording another stage of the crystal's growth.

I never get tired of looking at them.
