Despite the name, Herkimer Diamonds are not true diamonds. They are exceptionally clear Quartz crystals prized for their natural brilliance, sharp terminations and distinctive habit. Many form with points at both ends because they grow freely within cavities rather than being attached to a matrix at one end.

The pieces in this collection are especially lovely for their crystal-clear clarity, natural sparkle and beautifully defined faces. Some are almost water-clear, while others contain tiny inclusions, veils, carbon-rich specks or internal features that give each crystal its own character.

What Makes Herkimer Diamonds Special?

Herkimer Diamonds are famous for their naturally formed double terminations, high clarity and unusually bright lustre.

Unlike most Quartz crystals that grow attached to matrix at one end, Herkimers often develop freely inside cavities within ancient dolostone. This allows both ends of the crystal to terminate naturally, creating the distinctive faceted form for which they are known.

Their name comes from Herkimer County in New York, where these remarkable crystals became particularly well known.

The word diamond refers to their brilliance and appearance rather than their mineral identity. Geologically, they are Quartz rather than Diamond.

Although many Herkimer Diamonds are exceptionally clear, natural inclusions are part of their appeal.

Care & Handling

Herkimer Diamonds are Quartz and have a Mohs hardness of approximately 7, making them reasonably durable for their size.

• Clean gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free soap made with naturally occurring surfactants.
• Dry thoroughly with a soft microfibre cloth.
• Avoid bleach, acids and abrasive cleaning products.
• Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaning where prominent internal fractures are present.
• Protect from hard knocks and drops, as natural points and edges can chip.
• Store in a soft pouch, lined box or separate compartment to protect the crystal faces and terminations.
• Keep away from young children and pets because these are small natural specimens and may present a choking hazard.

Because Herkimer Diamonds naturally form with pointed terminations, they should not be used for massage, bodywork or any activity involving pressure against the skin.
