I have always found Phantom Quartz fascinating because it feels like a crystal that kept a diary. Not a neat diary, of course. More like one of those honest, slightly chaotic notebooks where you can see the crossed-out sentences, the folded corners, the coffee mark on page three and the moment someone clearly changed direction halfway through a thought.

That is what I love about it. Phantom Quartz does not hide the fact that it grew in stages. It lets you see the outline of what it used to be before it kept becoming something else. Phantom Quartz is a variety of Quartz that contains visible internal outlines of earlier crystal growth. These outlines are often called “phantoms” because they look like ghost crystals suspended inside the larger crystal.

The phantom may appear as a white, grey, green, red, brown, smoky or mineral-coloured shape within the clear or translucent Quartz. Sometimes it looks like a delicate mountain. Sometimes it looks like a shadow. Sometimes it appears as several stacked outlines, showing multiple pauses and restarts in the crystal’s formation.

Quartz forms when silica-rich fluids move through cracks, cavities and open spaces in rock. Given the right conditions, silicon and oxygen combine into the structure we know as Quartz, gradually building crystals over time. Phantom Quartz forms when that growth is interrupted or marked in some way.

• Dry thoroughly with a soft microfibre cloth.

• Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaners, particularly for included or fractured pieces.
• Avoid bleach, acids, harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning products.
• Store separately from softer stones to prevent scratching them, and away from harder stones to protect the Quartz surface.
• Protect natural points and terminations from impact.
• Avoid dropping onto hard surfaces, as Quartz can chip or fracture.
• Keep away from prolonged harsh direct sunlight, especially if the piece contains coloured inclusions or associated minerals.

For energetic cleansing, many people prefer gentle methods such as moonlight, sound, placing near Selenite, smoke cleansing where culturally appropriate, or simply holding the crystal with quiet intention.

Phantom Quartz is safe to handle, wear and display under normal conditions.
