Rarity

Gypsum is one of the world's most abundant sulfate minerals. Fine transparent Selenite crystals, large Satin Spar formations and exceptional Desert Roses are much less common and highly sought after by collectors.

Suitable for Jewellery

Occasionally. Due to its softness, Selenite is generally better suited to display pieces and collector specimens than everyday jewellery.

Cleaning & Preservation

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft artist's brush. Avoid prolonged contact with water, ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning and harsh chemicals.

Food & Drink Contact

Gypsum is slightly soluble in water. While brief accidental contact is unlikely to cause immediate damage, prolonged soaking gradually dissolves the surface and is not recommended. There is no demonstrated benefit to preparing crystal-infused drinking water.

Sunlight

Stable under normal display conditions. Protect from excessive moisture, abrasion and repeated handling.

Health & Safety

Safe to wear and handle. Dust produced during cutting or carving should not be inhaled. Professional lapidaries use water-fed equipment and appropriate dust extraction when working Gypsum.

Common Treatments

Usually untreated. Some decorative pieces may be polished, waxed or stabilised to strengthen delicate surfaces. Any treatments should always be disclosed.

 


 

Is Selenite Right for You?

Selenite is one of several natural forms of Gypsum, a hydrated calcium sulfate mineral.

Unlike many gemstones that crystallise deep within volcanic rocks, Gypsum forms much closer to the Earth's surface.

It develops when mineral-rich water slowly evaporates from ancient inland seas, salt lakes and coastal lagoons.

As the water disappears, dissolved minerals begin to crystallise.

Halite (rock salt) often forms first.

The answer is surprisingly simple.

Both are Gypsum.

They simply grew in different ways.

True Selenite

True Selenite forms as transparent or translucent crystals with flat faces and exceptional clarity.

Large crystals may appear almost like sheets of glass.

Light passes easily through them, giving them the soft, moonlit appearance that inspired their name.

Satin Spar

The material most commonly sold as "Selenite" today is actually Satin Spar Gypsum.

Rather than growing as clear crystals, Satin Spar develops millions of fine parallel fibres.

These microscopic fibres create the beautiful silky sheen that seems to move across the surface as the stone is turned.

This optical effect is known as chatoyancy, or the cat's-eye effect.

Although mineralogically different in appearance, Satin Spar is every bit as natural and every bit as beautiful as true Selenite.

Its softness is part of its beauty, but it also means it deserves a little extra care.

Unlike harder gemstones, Selenite can be scratched with a fingernail, and prolonged contact with water will gradually dull and damage the surface.

To preserve your Selenite:

• Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft artist's brush.

• Avoid soaking or prolonged exposure to water.

• Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.

• Keep away from abrasive cleaners and harsh household chemicals.

• Store separately from harder minerals such as Quartz, Agate and Jasper to avoid scratching.

• Handle crystal edges with care, particularly large blades and delicate crystal clusters.

Although a brief accidental splash is unlikely to cause immediate harm, repeated or prolonged contact with water slowly dissolves tiny amounts of the mineral. Over time this softens sharp edges, reduces the polish and can diminish the beautiful silky lustre of Satin Spar.

Health & Safety

Selenite and Satin Spar are natural varieties of the mineral Gypsum and are considered safe to wear, handle and display.

There is no scientific evidence that crystal-infused water provides health benefits. Since Gypsum slowly dissolves in water, immersing Selenite or Satin Spar for drinking water is not recommended, both to preserve the specimen and to avoid introducing dissolved mineral material unnecessarily.
