Agate belongs to the Chalcedony family, a microcrystalline variety of Quartz composed primarily of Silicon Dioxide (SiO₂).

Unlike the large individual crystals found in Amethyst or Smoky Quartz, Agate forms as an incredibly fine network of microscopic Quartz and Moganite crystals woven together so tightly that individual crystals cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Its beauty comes not from crystal faces but from growth.

Most Agates begin life inside cavities left behind by gas bubbles within volcanic lava.

As lava cools, trapped gases create rounded voids known as vesicles.

Much later, silica-rich groundwater begins circulating through these cavities.

Over immense periods of geological time, microscopic layers of Chalcedony are slowly deposited along the cavity walls.

After all these years, I still find myself picking up Agates and wondering,

I've held Agates that looked like tiny forests, complete with trees disappearing into the mist.

I can't think of many things that still hold that kind of mystery.
