What appears to be a small, dark, unremarkable pebble suddenly reveals itself — translucent, glowing softly, as though lit from within.

Apache Tears are a variety of obsidian, the volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that crystals have no time to grow. The result is a smooth, glassy stone with a depth that rewards curiosity.

Unlike the broad, flat sheets of obsidian found at many volcanic sites, Apache Tears form as rounded nodules — tumbled and shaped by geological forces over thousands of years into the small, tactile pieces collectors treasure today.

The Story Written by the Earth

Apache Tears are a specific form of obsidian found primarily in the desert regions of the American Southwest, particularly Arizona and Nevada, as well as parts of Mexico.

They form within a matrix of perlite — a pale, crumbly volcanic rock — and are gradually released as the surrounding material weathers away over time. This slow geological process gives each Apache Tear its characteristic rounded, smooth shape.

Because obsidian is amorphous rather than crystalline, Apache Tears do not belong to any formal crystal system. They are technically a glass — one of nature's most elegant accidents, created in moments of intense volcanic activity and preserved across millennia.

Their translucency is one of their most remarkable qualities. Hold one to a bright light and the stone transforms, revealing warm, honey-brown tones and subtle internal patterns invisible in ordinary light.

According to Apache tradition, a group of Apache warriors were pursued by the US Cavalry in the 1870s and, rather than surrender, rode their horses off a cliff in what is now Arizona. When the families of the fallen warriors learned of their deaths, their grief was so profound that their tears fell to the earth and turned to stone.

Whether understood as history, legend or metaphor, the story has given these small stones a depth of meaning that goes far beyond their geological origins.
