Hypersthene is one of those minerals that teaches you the value of looking twice.
The first glance rarely tells the whole story.
Resting on a table, it can appear almost plain.
Deep charcoal.
Soft black.
Perhaps with a hint of brown.
It's attractive enough...
But then you lift it into the light.
Almost instantly, a bronze glow begins to emerge from beneath the surface.
Not on the surface.
Within it.
It seems to drift through the stone like silk woven beneath polished glass.
Move it a little further and the glow disappears.
Tilt it back and it's there again.
It isn't dramatic.
It isn't trying to steal the show.
It's simply waiting for the right light.
That gentle metallic shimmer is known as schiller, an optical effect created by countless microscopic mineral structures reflecting light in a single direction.
It's the characteristic that makes Hypersthene instantly recognisable to collectors.
Unlike Labradorite, which bursts into brilliant flashes of blue and green, Hypersthene whispers in shades of bronze, copper and soft gold.

The Story Written by the Earth
Hypersthene belongs to the pyroxene mineral group, a family of silicate minerals that form deep within the Earth's crust and upper mantle.
Its name comes from the Greek words hyper meaning "over" and sthenos meaning "strength", a reference to its hardness when it was first described in the nineteenth century.
Although modern mineral classification has become more detailed, with much material now identified within the orthopyroxene series as Enstatite or Ferrosilite, the name Hypersthene remains widely used throughout the gemstone, lapidary and collector communities for material displaying its characteristic bronze schiller.
It forms primarily in igneous rocks, particularly those that cool slowly beneath the Earth's surface, such as gabbro, norite and certain granites.
These environments allow the mineral crystals to develop over immense periods of time.
Hypersthene may also occur in some metamorphic rocks, where existing minerals are transformed under high temperatures and pressures.
Its beautiful metallic sheen is not caused by surface polishing.
It is created by countless microscopic lamellae and aligned mineral structures within the crystal itself.
As light enters the stone, these internal features reflect it in a single direction, producing the soft bronze shimmer known as schiller.

Most Hypersthene ranges from dark grey and charcoal to deep olive-brown or black, with flashes of bronze, copper or golden brown becoming visible only when the stone is viewed from the correct angle.

With a Mohs hardness of 5 to 6, Hypersthene is suitable for jewellery when treated with reasonable care and is especially popular in cabochons, freeforms, palm stones and decorative carvings, where large polished surfaces best display its remarkable optical effect.
Important deposits occur in Canada, India, Norway, Greenland, South Africa, Australia and parts of the United States.
Some of the finest lapidary material comes from Canada, where beautifully polished Hypersthene has become highly prized for its rich bronze shimmer.
Nature's Signature
No two pieces of Hypersthene reveal their light in exactly the same way.
Some display broad sheets of glowing bronze that sweep across the stone as it moves.
Others reveal delicate ribbons of copper or soft golden highlights that appear only for a brief moment before fading back into charcoal grey.
Even the darkest specimens contain hidden depth.
The orientation of the microscopic crystal structures determines where the schiller appears, meaning every cabochon or carving reflects light differently.
One piece may glow dramatically across its centre.
Another may reveal only a narrow ribbon of bronze along one edge.
The effect is never painted.
Never artificial.
It is built into the mineral itself.
Some specimens also contain subtle variations in colour, with hints of olive, chocolate brown or smoky silver adding even more depth beneath the polished surface.

Almost black.

It's captivating.
I don't think Hypersthene ever reveals everything at once.
Perhaps that's why I enjoy it so much.
It asks you to slow down.

To stop rushing past and really look.

I suppose that's why it has always felt a little magical to me.
