There are very few minerals that can make someone gasp.
Labradorite is one of them.

At first glance, Labradorite can seem almost understated.

The Story Written by the Earth
Labradorite belongs to the plagioclase feldspar group, one of the most abundant families of minerals in the Earth's crust.
It formed deep within molten rock as magma cooled slowly over millions of years, allowing countless microscopic layers to develop inside each crystal.
Those microscopic layers are the reason Labradorite appears almost ordinary until light strikes it at exactly the right angle.
When light enters the stone, it passes through these incredibly thin internal structures.

Rainbow Labradorite
Despite its name, Rainbow Labradorite is not actually Labradorite.
It is a variety of White Labradorite (Moonstone) from the feldspar family that displays blue flashes and soft iridescence.
Although related, it is mineralogically distinct and deserves to be appreciated in its own right.

Black Labradorite
Some darker specimens are marketed as Black Labradorite due to their rich charcoal background, which provides dramatic contrast against bright flashes of colour.

Look for broad, vibrant flashes that travel smoothly across the surface rather than small isolated patches.

Why do some pieces of Labradorite seem to explode with colour while others appear almost plain?
The answer lies entirely within the stone.
Labradorescence is created by microscopic layers inside the crystal. If those layers are perfectly positioned, light is reflected back in spectacular flashes. If they are less favourably orientated, the colours may only appear from certain angles—or be much more subdued.
This is why two pieces cut from the same rough stone can look completely different.

Is Rainbow Labradorite actually Labradorite?
Not quite.
The material commonly sold as Rainbow Labradorite is actually a variety of White Labradorite, more correctly classified as a type of Moonstone within the feldspar family. Although closely related, it is mineralogically distinct from classic Labradorite.
What is Spectrolite?
Spectrolite is an exceptional variety of Labradorite discovered in Finland. It is celebrated for displaying an unusually broad spectrum of vivid colours, often including blue, green, gold, orange, red and violet within a single stone.
