Obsidian is the product of fire, movement and extraordinary speed.
While most minerals spend thousands—or even millions—of years slowly growing into crystals beneath the Earth's surface, Obsidian takes an entirely different path. It is created in moments.
As silica-rich lava erupts from a volcano and pours across the landscape, it sometimes cools so rapidly that its atoms never have the opportunity to organise themselves into an orderly crystal structure. Instead, the molten rock freezes almost instantly, preserving the liquid in solid form.
The result is natural volcanic glass.
Smooth.
Glossy.
Beautifully reflective.
Unlike Quartz, Amethyst or Fluorite, Obsidian is not a true mineral because it lacks the internal crystalline structure that defines minerals. Instead, it is classified as a naturally occurring volcanic glass—one of the most remarkable geological materials found on Earth.
Its appearance is every bit as fascinating as its formation.
Some Obsidian is an uninterrupted velvet black, absorbing light into an almost mirror-like surface.
Other varieties shimmer with golden or silver flashes that seem to float beneath the polish.

The Story Written by the Earth
Obsidian begins as silica-rich lava.
Unlike the fluid basaltic lava responsible for broad volcanic plains, silica-rich magma is far thicker and more viscous. When this lava reaches the Earth's surface during an eruption, it cools with astonishing speed.
Sometimes this cooling is so rapid that atoms become locked exactly where they are.
There is no time for crystals to grow.
No opportunity for the ordered atomic structure seen in minerals such as Quartz or Feldspar.
Instead, the molten material solidifies directly into volcanic glass.
This process produces one of geology's rarest phenomena:
A naturally occurring glass created entirely by nature.
Because Obsidian lacks an organised crystal lattice, it is described as amorphous rather than crystalline.
Its chemical composition is dominated by silicon dioxide (SiO₂), usually comprising around 70–75% of the material, although smaller amounts of iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium and numerous trace elements contribute to its colour and physical properties.
The exact chemistry depends upon the composition of the original magma.
This explains why Obsidian displays such remarkable diversity despite sharing the same volcanic origin.
Black Obsidian
The best-known variety is classic Black Obsidian.
Its deep colour results from microscopic crystals and tiny inclusions of iron and magnesium-rich minerals dispersed throughout the glass. Although it often appears completely opaque, thin edges may reveal subtle brown translucency when held against a strong light.
Snowflake Obsidian
Snowflake Obsidian begins life as ordinary black Obsidian.
Over time, however, tiny white crystals of the mineral Cristobalite slowly begin to crystallise within the volcanic glass.
These delicate radial clusters resemble falling snowflakes suspended in midnight skies, giving this variety its instantly recognisable appearance.
Unlike painted patterns, every "snowflake" grew naturally inside the glass after the lava had cooled.
Mahogany Obsidian
Mahogany Obsidian contains greater concentrations of iron oxides, producing rich reddish-brown patches interwoven through the black volcanic glass.
The swirling patterns vary enormously from specimen to specimen, making each piece entirely unique.
Gold Sheen Obsidian
Gold Sheen Obsidian possesses one of the most remarkable optical effects found in volcanic glass.
During cooling, countless microscopic gas bubbles became aligned in thin layers.
As light reflects from these parallel layers, a luminous golden sheen appears to float beneath the surface, almost as though liquid gold had become trapped inside the stone.
Silver Sheen Obsidian
Silver Sheen Obsidian forms through a similar process.
Here, slightly different bubble sizes and orientations scatter light to produce shimmering silver reflections instead of gold.
Depending upon the angle of illumination, the effect can range from subtle satin-like lustre to brilliant metallic flashes.
Rainbow Obsidian
Perhaps the most spectacular variety is Rainbow Obsidian.
Extremely thin internal layers created during cooling interfere with incoming light in much the same way as soap bubbles or oil films.
This phenomenon, known as thin-film interference, produces breathtaking bands of iridescent green, purple, blue, bronze and gold that only become visible under carefully directed light.
Each colour is created entirely by physics rather than pigments.
Fire Obsidian
Among the rarest varieties is Fire Obsidian.
It develops when microscopic layers of magnetite nanoparticles become arranged with extraordinary precision during cooling.
These layers diffract light to produce brilliant iridescent flashes resembling flames moving beneath the surface.
High-quality Fire Obsidian is exceptionally rare and highly prized by collectors.
Apache Tears
Apache Tears are rounded nodules of Obsidian formed as droplets of lava cooled while travelling through the air.
Unlike fractured sheets of Obsidian, these volcanic droplets weather into smooth natural pebbles that often display beautiful smoky translucency around their edges.
They tell a very different geological story despite belonging to the same volcanic family.
Obsidian most commonly forms along the margins of volcanic domes, lava flows and rhyolitic eruptions where cooling occurs extremely rapidly.
Important deposits occur throughout volcanic regions of the world including Mexico, the United States, Iceland, Armenia, Japan, Italy, Peru, Chile, Indonesia and New Zealand.
Because volcanic activity continues today, Obsidian is still being created.
Unlike many minerals whose formation belongs only to the distant geological past, Obsidian reminds us that the Earth remains wonderfully alive.
Even now, somewhere beneath an active volcano, nature may be preparing the next piece that will one day become part of someone's collection.
Nature's Signature
No two pieces of Obsidian are ever identical.
Some possess a flawless mirror-black surface that reflects light with extraordinary clarity.
Others reveal hidden worlds beneath the polish—golden sheens that drift across the surface, silver flashes that appear and disappear as the stone moves, or subtle rainbows that only emerge under just the right angle of light.
Snowflake Obsidian tells an entirely different story.
Its delicate white Cristobalite crystals form naturally within the cooling glass, creating patterns that resemble frost spreading across a winter window. No two arrangements are ever repeated.
Mahogany Obsidian develops rich swirls of reddish-brown iron oxides, while Apache Tears weather into smooth rounded nodules whose softly translucent edges reveal the volcanic glass hidden beneath their dark exterior.
Some specimens preserve tiny gas bubbles frozen in place from the original eruption.
Others contain minute mineral inclusions, flow banding or subtle variations in colour that record the movement of molten lava as it cooled.
Collectors often treasure these natural features.

Through Human Eyes
Few natural materials have shaped human history quite like Obsidian.
Long before the discovery of metals, people recognised that this remarkable volcanic glass possessed an extraordinary quality.
When fractured, Obsidian produces edges so incredibly sharp that they can be finer than modern surgical steel.
Unlike crystalline minerals, which tend to break along crystal planes, Obsidian fractures with what geologists call conchoidal fracture—smooth, curved surfaces resembling the inside of a seashell. This type of fracture creates edges of astonishing sharpness, allowing ancient craftspeople to fashion knives, spear points, arrowheads and cutting tools of exceptional quality.
Some modern surgical scalpels are still manufactured from Obsidian today because their cutting edges can be several times sharper than the finest stainless steel blades. Under a microscope, an Obsidian edge appears almost perfectly smooth.
It is a remarkable example of ancient geology continuing to influence modern science.
Archaeological evidence shows that people have worked Obsidian for at least 100,000 years, making it one of humanity's earliest and most important materials.
Ancient communities established extensive trade networks to obtain high-quality Obsidian from volcanic regions. Long before written history, this volcanic glass travelled hundreds—and sometimes thousands—of kilometres, exchanged between cultures that recognised its immense practical value.
Some of the finest known examples come from the ancient civilisations of Mesoamerica.

An Enchantress Reflection
One of my favourite memories involving Obsidian wasn't discovering the stone itself.
It was discovering the story someone shared with me.
Many years ago, while visiting one of my long-time suppliers—a passionate collector with an eye for truly exceptional minerals—he placed a beautifully polished Silver Sheen Obsidian sphere into my hands.
As I admired the soft silver glow moving beneath its surface, he smiled and said,
"Do you know what this is?"
I replied, "A beautiful Obsidian sphere."
He laughed.
"Yes... but it's also a Seer Stone."
He went on to explain that throughout history, highly polished Obsidian spheres and mirrors have been used for scrying—the ancient practice of gazing into reflective surfaces for contemplation, meditation and symbolic insight. Then, seeing the puzzled look on my face, he added with a grin,
"Think of the Palantíri from The Lord of the Rings*."*
Suddenly I understood exactly what he meant.
Whether viewed through the lens of history, folklore or fantasy, I found the idea utterly fascinating.
Not because I believed the sphere possessed magical powers, but because it reminded me how deeply people have always been captivated by reflective stones. Long before mirrors became commonplace, a perfectly polished sphere of volcanic glass must have seemed almost otherworldly.
Even today, when I hold a beautiful piece of Silver Sheen Obsidian beneath the light and watch the silvery glow drift beneath its surface, I find myself thinking about that conversation.
Sometimes the stories we discover around a crystal become just as memorable as the crystal itself.
And perhaps that's part of the joy of collecting.
Every piece carries more than geological history.

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass, and every piece is completely unique.
No two eruptions are ever identical, and neither are the stones they create. Variations in colour, translucency, flow banding, sheen, iridescence and natural inclusions are all part of the geological story recorded within each specimen.
Some pieces display a flawless mirror-black surface, while others reveal shimmering silver or gold, delicate snowflake patterns, rich mahogany swirls or hidden rainbows that only appear when viewed under the right light.
