Braided Sweetgrass is my favourite smudging item.

There is something about it that feels gentle from the very beginning. The scent is soft and sweet, not sharp or overpowering, and it has a way of making a space feel welcomed rather than stripped bare. Some smoke cleansing tools feel like they clear with force. Sweetgrass feels different to me. It feels like an invitation.

I was first introduced to Sweetgrass by an Apache Elder, who offered me a traditional tribal cleansing and welcoming. It is difficult to put into words without making it sound smaller than it was, but it was one of those rare experiences that stayed with me completely. It felt magical, transcendent and deeply respectful. Not rushed. Not decorative. Not performed for effect. Every part of it felt deliberate and thoughtful.
