What Is Silver Sheen Obsidian?

Silver Sheen Obsidian is a natural variety of Obsidian displaying a silver, grey or moonlit reflective effect beneath its polished surface.

Like all Obsidian, it forms when silica-rich molten rock cools too rapidly for an orderly crystal structure to develop. Instead of becoming a crystalline mineral, the material solidifies as natural volcanic glass.

Obsidian is therefore described as amorphous, meaning its atoms are not arranged in a regular repeating lattice. It is more accurately classified as a mineraloid or glassy volcanic rock than as a true mineral crystal.

What Creates the Silver Sheen?

The silvery effect is produced by extremely fine internal structures formed while the lava was still moving and cooling.

Microscopic gas bubbles, particles and flow layers can become stretched and aligned within the molten material. Once the Obsidian is cut and polished in the correct orientation, light reflects from those internal features and returns as a soft silver glow.

The effect may resemble chatoyancy because the light appears to move as the stone turns, but Silver Sheen Obsidian does not display a true cat’s-eye band in the strict gemmological sense. Its shimmer is more accurately described as an internal sheen created by aligned microscopic structures within the volcanic glass.

The direction of the cut is particularly important. A piece may contain beautiful sheen, but unless it is shaped and polished in a way that intersects those internal layers, much of the effect can remain hidden.

Why Does the Sheen Appear on Different Sides?

The microscopic layers responsible for the shimmer follow the flow of the original lava.

When the material is oriented thoughtfully, those layers can cross more than one polished face. This allows the silver reflection to appear from different directions rather than being confined to a single surface.

On a six-sided point, one face may show a broad reflective field while another reveals a narrow streak or softly glowing patch. Rotating the carving allows the viewer to follow the way the lava once moved through the material.

In a crystalline substance, atoms have enough time and mobility to arrange themselves into an ordered structure as the material cools.

Obsidian solidifies too quickly for that process to occur.

Obsidian was one of the most significant materials used throughout ancient Mesoamerica.

Silver Sheen Obsidian is natural volcanic glass. It can take a beautiful polish, but it may scratch, chip or fracture if treated carelessly.

To preserve your Silver Sheen Obsidian point:

• Clean gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free soap made with naturally occurring surfactants.

• Dry immediately and thoroughly with a soft microfibre cloth.

• Avoid prolonged soaking, particularly if the point has natural pits, fine fractures or surface-reaching features.

• Keep bleach, acids, strong chemicals and abrasive cleaning products away from the surface.

• Do not use rough brushes, scouring cloths or polishing powders.

• Store separately from harder minerals such as Quartz, Topaz, Sapphire and Diamond, which may scratch the polish.

• Avoid dropping the point onto tiles, concrete, stone benches or other hard surfaces.

• Lift it by supporting the broader body rather than holding the tip.

• Display it on a flat, stable surface away from shelf edges and places where it may be knocked.

• Keep away from high heat, open flames and sudden temperature changes.

• Inspect the point and edges periodically for chips, cracks or instability.

• Remove it from display if it becomes damaged.

To preserve the appearance of the silver sheen, wipe away fingerprints with a clean microfibre cloth. Skin oils and dust can dull the polished surface and make the internal reflection less visible.

For energetic cleansing, many people choose gentle, non-contact methods such as moonlight, sound, placing the point near Selenite, smoke cleansing where culturally appropriate, or sitting quietly with it in contemplation.

Health & Safety

Polished Silver Sheen Obsidian is generally safe to handle and display while intact.

Its principal risks come from the pointed form, the exceptionally sharp edges that may develop if it is damaged and the particles produced during lapidary work.

Pointed Form

These are standing collector pieces and decorative carvings.

They must not be used for massage, bodywork, acupressure, reflexology or any activity involving pressure against the skin.

Even an intact point can cause puncture, eye or impact injuries.

Handle safely by:

• keeping the point directed away from the face and body

• holding the wider central section securely

• never lifting the carving by its tip

• displaying it on a stable surface

Chipping and Breakage

• wear protective gloves when collecting fragments

• inspect the surrounding area carefully for small shards

• do not attempt to sand or smooth the edge without appropriate lapidary equipment and training

A small chip may be capable of causing a serious cut.

Lapidary Dust

Cutting, drilling, grinding or sanding Obsidian can produce silica-containing dust and fine glass-like particles.

This material should not be inhaled or allowed to enter the eyes. Professional lapidaries use water-fed equipment, suitable extraction, eye and face protection, respiratory protection and controlled cleaning practices.

The finished polished point does not release dust during normal handling or display.

Water, Food and Elixirs

There is no scientific evidence that crystal-infused drinking water provides health benefits.

Do not place Silver Sheen Obsidian in:

An Enchantress Reflection

The first Silver Sheen Obsidian piece I ever saw was a large sphere belonging to one of my crystal suppliers, and I was completely hooked.

The light seemed to travel quite purposefully through it, moving from one side of the sphere to the other as it was turned. It was not simply a sparkle sitting on the surface. It felt as though something silvery was travelling through the darkness, appearing and disappearing according to the angle.

I have always had a soft spot for crystals with inclusions and internal features. That is hardly a secret. I love pieces that ask you to look a little more closely because there is always the chance of finding something extra that was not visible at first glance.

I am also a Lord of the Rings fan, so naturally that large dark sphere with its shifting inner light reminded me of a palantír. Once that thought had entered my mind, there was never much chance that I was going to leave without it.

Since then, Silver Sheen Obsidian has remained one of those materials I find genuinely mesmerising. I love the elegance of it, the traditional seer-stone symbolism and the way the shimmer can appear to move through the piece rather than merely across it.
